Delicious Seville orange marmalade made in sunny California. Perfect for spreading on toast. An OpenAI Christmas Story.
Seville Marmalade and an OpenAI Christmas Story
Most of the nation is currently in a deep freeze, while here in California it is a lovely 75ºF.
A good time to make our marmalade gift jars. Presents to our unfortunate relatives in the frozen parts of the country. It is also an opportunity to try out OpenAi's ChatGPT.
I asked the chatbot "Who invented marmalade?"
Orange marmalade is a type of fruit preserve made from the peel and juice of oranges. It is believed that orange marmalade was first made by the ancient Romans, who used quince fruit to make a type of marmalade called melimelum. However, the modern version of orange marmalade as we know it today was developed in the 18th century in Scotland.
According to legend, orange marmalade was first made by Janet Keiller, the wife of a Dundee merchant, in 1797. She is credited with being the first person to make orange marmalade from the bitter Seville oranges that were imported from Spain. The Keiller family went on to establish a successful marmalade business, and orange marmalade quickly became popular in Britain and beyond.
Our son introduced this to us earlier this month. Give ChatGPT a prompt and watch it get creative. For example, our son gave this prompt to ChatGPT:
"Write a poem about my Dad gardening in Riverside and his brother gardening in Maryland."
ChatGPT's response:
My Dad gardens in Riverside, while his brother gardens in Maryland,
The two of them toil and labor, in soil so different and grand. My Dad's garden brings forth oranges, while his brother's yields peaches and pears,
My Dad's garden is a wealth of bounty, while his brother's brings him cheer. The two of them, so far apart, still share a common thread,
Though separated by many miles, their love of gardening is not dead.My Dad toils in the hot sun, while his brother has humidity,
The two of them, so far away, still share a common unity. My Dad's garden blooms with life, while his brother's brings forth peace,
Though separated by many miles, their bond will never cease.
This is a post about making Orange Seville Marmalade. I also thought I would play with the ChatGPT technology. I asked the AI to make a story about creating marmalade in California at Christmas. The main character would be Linda. Where ChatGPT is responsible for the text, it will be indented and in Italics.
Marmalade
We decided to make a half dozen jars of Seville Orange marmalade. We had a lot of those oranges. The Seville is a tart orange. The rind and seeds are a great source of pectin for jelling.
The juice is tart and not at all like a Mandarin or navel.
Our OpenAI Artificial Christmas Story Begins...
It was Christmas time in California, and the air was warm and sunny. Linda, a skilled cook and lover of all things sweet and tangy, had been thinking about making marmalade for weeks. She had heard about this delicious preserve made from citrus fruit, and she was determined to try her hand at making it herself.
On Christmas morning,
Linda woke up bright and early, ready to get to work in the kitchen. She gathered all the ingredients she would need, including oranges, lemons, and grapefruits, and set to work peeling and chopping the fruit.
As she worked,
the aroma of the citrus fruit filled the kitchen, filling Linda with a sense of holiday cheer. She hummed along to Christmas carols as she stirred the pot of marmalade, watching as it slowly thickened and turned into a rich, orange-colored preserve.
Finally, after hours of simmering and stirring,
the marmalade was ready. Linda spooned it into jars and sealed them tightly, labeling each jar with the date and the type of fruit she had used. She placed the jars on a shelf in the pantry, where they would be safe from spoilage.
That evening, as the family gathered around the Christmas tree,
Linda presented her homemade marmalade as a gift to her loved ones. They were all delighted by the delicious treat, and they couldn't wait to spread it on their morning toast or spoon it over ice cream.
From that day on, marmalade became a beloved tradition in the household, enjoyed by all on special occasions and during the holiday season.
